The Itinerary

This incredible tour of South Africa is a must for any adventure motorcycle rider. The objective of the tour is to rediscover South Africa after our lockdown has ended, bringing much-needed cash flow to the small lodges we'll be staying at on our adventure. Anyone with a valid motorcycle license is welcome to join the tour, there are some beautiful off-road sections. Support will be given to inexperienced riders by our tour crew. You ride at your own pace always and pillion riders can jump into the support truck at any point!

A brief itinerary is set out below, but we will send you a more detailed one once you have signed up for the tour. Be quick as we are limiting the number of places to 10!

At SA Adventure, the client comes first so your safety and enjoyment of your motorcycle adventure is our number one priority!

Day One

It's finally time to get out and explore again on our bikes! We meet up at our hotel in the afternoon. It's set in the picturesque Kwa-Zulu Natal midlands in the Fort Nottingham area. Yes, there is an actual fort in the area and it has been turned into a museum, its well worth a visit to learn about the local history.

The area is considered to be one of the most scenic in South Africa and has some amazing gravel roads that we will be riding down and exploring on our motorcycles.

Day Two

We have breakfast at the hotel and then start heading for the wild coast. Our destination for the day is Mbotyi River Lodge. Situated at the mouth of the Mbotyi River and tidal estuary, its nestled between the rolling hills, lush tropical forest and the warm Indian Ocean. After exploring some beautiful back roads to get to the lodge, there's time to explore the beach or the nearby Double Falls and Cathedral Rock which are just a short hike away.

Day Three

Today is an epic off-road riding day. We are heading towards the little village of Rhodes in the Eastern Cape. We'll be riding up two bucket list South African passes today, Pot River Pass and Naude's Nek Pass. Boasting beautiful scenery and terrain, we stop along the way to take it all in and take photos. After a rewarding day of riding our motorcycles, we arrive at our accommodation for the next two nights in the historical village of Rhodes.

Day Four

Today is a rest day and it's yours to enjoy. You can relax in Rhodes and read a book or try some fly fishing, or you can join us on an optional extra we have planned for you, which is taking an outride on our motorcycles around the area and down the infamous War Trail.

The trail, which is another bucket list pass in South Africa, gives wonderful views of Halstone Krans and the valley farmlands beyond. There are some interesting rock formations along the route, the most notable of which is ‘Funnystone’ which lends its name to the farm opposite.

Day Five

After breakfast, we leave Rhodes via some beautiful gravel roads. We are headed through the Eastern Cape to the small village of Hogsback via some very scenic gravel back roads. Very exciting riding in this area. Situated in the Amathole Mountains, Hogsback and the Amatola Forest is often claimed, as J. R. R. Tolkien's inspiration for The Lord of the Rings. There is loads to do around the area, including visiting the Eco Shrine, but we have a little surprise on the cards for you this afternoon when we reach the lodge!

Day Six

We leave the sleepy village of Hogsback and head towards the Free State Province and the Gariep Dam. We traverse another pass today called Michel's Pass just outside Hogsback. It's a lesser-known pass and is only 17kms long, but it offers some great riding. We head through a couple of small villages today and also get to ride our motorcycles on the Devils Bellow's Pass before stopping for lunch along the way. Words cannot describe the beauty this pass beholds. The Gariep Dam lies between the Free State and Eastern Cape provinces.  For the last night of our adventure, we will be staying on a game farm situated on the banks of the Orange river, downstream of the dam wall.

Day Seven

In the morning, after breakfast, we visit the Gariep Dam Wall. Completed in 1971, is the largest dam in South Africa. 'Gariep' is an ancient San word for 'great water'. After we've explored a little we say our farewells to our travel companions, with whom we have shared this awe-inspiring South African adventure motorcycle tour and created memories to last a lifetime.

We guarantee that you will have the ride of your life on this tour and see places you didn't know existed in our beautiful country, South Africa!
