Set in the Nieu Bethesda area of the Eastern Karoo, this exciting new 4x4 tour is the first in a series of five back road tours through the Karoo. Scheduled to take place in March 2021, it brings a whole new meaning to the word “adventure”. We guarantee you will see and experience things you didn’t know existed in South Africa.
It's also our mission to support the South African tourism industry, which has been heavily hit by the Covid-19 crisis, by bringing much-needed cash flow to the small lodges we'll be staying at on our adventure. If you’re interested in finding out more about this intriguing 4x4 adventure, please read through the brief itinerary set out below and register your interest to receive your special VIP discount...
We all meet up at our lodge on the banks of the Orange River in the Gariep dam area. Here we will enjoy a lovely dinner while getting to know one another. The SA Adventure team will give a detailed rundown of the tour we are about to undertake, sharing many years experience and tales of 4x4 off-road adventures we've been on. We will also give you some of the history of this amazing dam constructed in 1965. (opened in 1971)
We make our way to the magical, historical town of Nieu Bethesda by means of some very scenic gravel roads. We arrive by lunchtime and eat at the award-winning Waenhuis Restaurant. The various guesthouses will serve as accommodation throughout our stay in Nieu Bethesda. The afternoon of Day 2 will be spent exploring the soulful sites this town has to offer, such as the
Owl House, The Dutch Reformed Church, Sneeuberg Microbrewery, Cheese Farm & Coffee Roastery.
The day will start off with a hearty breakfast at the Nieu Karoo Country Restaurant, followed by a tour of the James Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre where the local guide Andries will share his knowledge on the creatures that roamed these Karoo planes 150 million years prior to the most well-known dinosaurs. Andries will then lead us down to the river where we will see unexcavated sites with actual fossils of these creatures still in place embedded in the sediment! After our fossil adventure we will go on an off-road excursion around the famous Kompasberg – the hauntingly beautiful pointed mountain you’ll see as you enter Nieu Bethesda. We end our day as the sun sets at the lookout point with a sundowner drink.
Breakfast in Nieu Bethesda is followed by some off-roading towards the gem of the Karoo: the town of Graaff- Reinet. Here we will explore one of the oldest towns in South Africa which was established in 1786. We’ll wander around town, visiting the Dutch reformed church, as well as the South African Giant flag project before making our way to the Camdeboo National Park where you will see one of the most awe-inspiring scenes you will ever lay your eyes upon: the vastness of the Valley of Desolation. Following our lesson in palaeontology from Andries on Day 3, it will become quite clear to imagine the once magnificent inland sea which is now the great and arid Karoo. Our preliminary end to the day will be some great off-road driving taking us back to Graaff- Reinet, followed by absolute luxury in an award-winning, five-star hotel.
The last day of our adventure is epic. Although the tour is winding down, we end in high spirits driving our 4x4's through beautiful Karoo scenery and back roads towards the Kuilfontein. On the way there we will stopover at Ganora farm to experience some of the many Bushmen paintings, medicinal plants as well as more unexcavated fossils that are in this area. Kuilfontein is a beautiful working farm where the stables have been converted into luxury suites. The farm has many tales but the best is about the lioness who took over the main dwelling to raise her cubs! We then all meet for dinner where we’ll share our experiences and relive the adventure through the viewpoint of the new lifelong friends we’ve made.
