Itinerary of the Off-Road adventure

The Karoo is calling you, this tour is set in the Nieu Bethesda area of the Eastern Karoo, this exciting new off-road tour is the first in a series of exciting back road tours through the Karoo. Suitable for both 4x4 and 4x2 vehicles, it brings a whole new meaning to the word “adventure”. We guarantee you will see and experience things you didn’t know existed in South Africa on this journey of discovery.

It's our mission to support the South African tourism industry, which has been heavily hit by the Covid-19 crisis, by bringing much-needed cash flow to the small lodges we'll be staying at on our adventure. If you’re interested in finding out more about this intriguing off-road Karoo adventure, please read through the brief itinerary set out below and book your place on this incredible off-road adventure today...

Day 1

We meet at our beautiful accommodation - a working Karoo farm with boutique accommodation, located between Colesberg and Hanover.  Tonight we will enjoy a top-notch Karoo dinner - prepared by our host Lexi - while getting to know one another.  The SA Adventure team will give a detailed rundown of the tour we are about to undertake, and we'll share many years of experience and tales of 4x4 off-road adventures we've been on.  We'll tell you about the history of the old farmhouse and this part of the Karoo, before retiring to our first class rooms - converted racehorse stables...

Day 2

We make our way to the magical, historical village of Nieu-Bethesda by means of some very scenic gravel roads. We enjoy an authentic Karoo lunch - prepared by Hester - on a farm located 14km from the town.  Here we will also learn more about the Karoo fossils from our host JP, see the largest collection of Karoo fossils in South Africa, then go for a walk towards some of the shelters on the farm where we'll get a chance to see real Bushmen paintings and learn more about the people who created them.  We then head to Nieu-Bethesda where we'll check into our stunning guest houses.  We all meet up for dinner where we've arranged for one of the town's oldest residents to share some of the histories of the famous people who've lived here!

Day 3

Nieu-Bethesda has so much on offer, so we've decided to stay here for two days!  We start the day off with a hearty breakfast, followed by a tour of the world-renowned Owl House created by Helen Martins. We will give you an exclusive tour of the camel yard and house, and share some of the history of this magical, yet sometimes overwhelming place and tell you more about each of the sculptures.

Following our tour of the Owl House, we'll head to the James Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre where the local guide Andries will share his knowledge on the creatures that roamed these Karoo planes 150 million years prior to the most well-known dinosaurs.  Andries will then lead us down to the river where we will see unexcavated sites with actual fossils of these creatures still embedded in the sediment! After our fossil adventure the town is yours to explore until around 1 pm when we will go on an off-road tour around the famous Compasberg – the hauntingly beautiful pointed mountain you’ll see as you enter Nieu-Bethesda.  We'll search for some stone men along the way and then end our day with a Karoo meal prepared by Chris at his award-winning restaurant!

Day 4

Breakfast in Nieu-Bethesda is followed by some off-roading towards the gem of the Karoo: the town of Graaff-Reinet. On the way, we'll visit the Camdeboo National Park where we'll share an unbelievable site with you! You will experience the real beauty of the Karoo and will be left breathless.  The Valley of Desolation. Following our lesson in palaeontology from Andries on Day 3, it will become quite clear to imagine the once magnificent inland sea which is now the great and arid Karoo. We continue to Graaff-Reinet, where we will have lunch in town at a very interesting 'Service Station'. After our delicious meal, we visit an Agave farm to learn from Tim Murray all about the booming craft Tequila or Agave Spirit business in Graaff-Reinet. We have a guided tour of the farm and get to taste some of the finest Karoo Agave drinks, before making our way to The Drostdy Hotel for check-in and a high tea followed by dinner in the award-winning, five-star hotel where Janus and his staff will ensure that you'll experience real Karoo luxury.

Day 5

The last day of our Karoo adventure is epic. Although the tour is winding down, we end in high spirits driving our 4x4's through beautiful Karoo scenery and back roads to find an abandoned old hospital that is steeped in history!  On the way there we will stopover in Richmond where our hosts Len and Pat will treat us to a delicious lunch! We then continue our journey on stunning dirt roads towards Hanover where we've found an incredible farm with some hippos, buffalo and other game!  Tonight, our host PC will take us all on a sunset drive to the beautiful river on the farm, followed by a delicious three-course meal which will include Karoo sushi as a starter! We'll close off the tour at dinner, where we'll integrate this wonderful experience and adventure we have been on together...
